The Municipality of Matosinhos promoted, in partnership with UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the U. Porto, the second edition of BluAct, a competition that supports sustainable entrepreneurship in investments related to the economy of the sea. Filtercork, Inclita Seaweed Solutions and Windcredible were the three big winners of the program.

Filtercork, from researchers Ariana Pintor and Mariko Carneiro, was the winning business project that demonstrated greater feasibility from the point of view of sustainability and environmental quality, which was also awarded the BluEco Award by Indaqua-Matosinhos, worth five thousand euros. The startup will market an innovative adsorbent – granulated cork coated with iron – which is used in the removal of arsenic from drinking water. This product has a low production cost (about 10 times lower than the market price of existing products) and the raw material base comes from a natural and renewable source with environmental advantages.

BluAct, promoted in partnership with UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the U. Porto, is a program to support the growth of the economy of the sea, which aims to support innovative business ideas, especially intensive in knowledge and technology, and promote the creation of skilled jobs, boosting the economy of the municipality of Matosinhos.
