Perfume and Aroma Engineering has occupied Alírio Rodrigues for over twenty years. Despite his retirement from teaching, this emeritus professor of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto continues to research and publish. One of his most recent articles is on these matters.
GETTING TO KNOW THE COMMUNITIES OF BACTERIA
In recent decades, researcher Luís Melo, from FEUP’s associated laboratory ALICE, has dedicated himself to studying communities of bacteria, known as biofilms. His aim is to find new ways of fighting them, when necessary. Whether in medicine or industry.
Catalysis allows chemical reactions to be accelerated and their final result to be guided. It is present in more than 80 per cent of chemical processes and is of considerable value as it represents between 30 and 40 per cent of the GDP of developed countries. Researcher José Luís Figueiredo, from FEUP’s associated laboratory ALICE, is one of the major national specialists in this field.
